For those wishing to migrate to Australia on a temporary or permanent basis, or for those employers considering employing a non resident of Australia, there are a number of programs for consideration. The main options include –

Working Holiday Maker Program

Australia has reciprocal Working Holiday Maker arrangements in effect with the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Republic of Ireland, Republic of Korea, Malta, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China, Finland, the Republic of Cyprus, France, and Italy, Belgium and Taiwan. Skilled Migration Program

Australia has enjoyed, for a long time, low unemployment levels and as such, demand for skilled professionals is high. The Government has in place a skilled migration program to provide international professionals with the opportunity to work in Australia and at the same, help meet the demand for skilled labour.

To find out more about the skilled migration program visit the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs website at

Employer Sponsored Migration

Employer Sponsored Migration allows for Australian employers to sponsor skilled foreign workers, enabling permanent entry into Australia in order to fill vacant skilled positions.

There are four categories for employer-sponsored migration to Australia:

  1. Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)
  2. Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS)
  3. Labour Agreements (LAs)
  4. Invest Australia Supported Skills (IASS) agreements

In all four cases, the employer must first nominate the position that will be filled by the prospective visa applicant for departmental approval. For more information about employer-sponsored migration visit the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs website.

Umbrella Companies and Immigration Lawyers

Many people choose to appoint a third party migration agent or “Umbrella Company’ or Immigration Lawyer to provide assistance in migrating to Australia to work. While not essential, for the time poor, this support can help streamline the process for obtaining the relevant visas and permits.

FGT Recruitment can provide recommendations on which are the leading umbrella companies in Australia.

FGT Recruitment consultants are intent on making your international career transition as efficient as possible and conversely, for the employer, we are committed to finding the right talent for you even if it means scouring globally.
